One of the biggest personalities on the poker circuit, Humberto Brenes is a cult figure, and is hugely popular with poker fans all over the world. However, a quick look at his career results will tell you that this guy is a very serious poker player.
A proud Costa Rican, Brenes is a trained engineer and successful entrepreneur with a host of business interests including hotels, restaurants, real estate ventures, construction, food export and media. He learnt how to play poker by watching his father and father’s friends play. That start proved to be a good one, and Humberto now has a very healthy $5,377,203 in total career winnings.
Brenes has an enviable record at the World Series of Poker*. He is 41st in the all-time money list with $2,080,006 and has two gold bracelets to his name. Both his tournament victories came in 1993, when he won the $2,500 Limit Hold'em and the $2,500 Pot Omaha Limit at the 24th WSOP*. In terms of cashes, Brenes has an incredible 52, putting him in seventh position overall. This stat illustrates Brenes’ enduring ability in a poker career that has spanned 20 years.
Nicknamed ‘The Shark’ Brenes is also a figurehead for poker in his home region, and he is a regular on the PokerStars Latin American Poker Tour. Indeed, Humberto cashed in 28th position at LAPT Punta del Este in Uruguay in Season 1, a tournament in which his brother Alex came second.
A member of Team PokerStars Pro since 2006, one of Brenes’ best qualities is that he has been able to move with the times, from the poker of old to the new fast-moving, media-savvy, multi-million dollar industry it is today.
